Artificial intelligence, or AI, has become more common in our daily lives. And many have been using AI to write blog content. So, how can you detect AI content?

But first, why does it matter to detect if you’re reading AI-generated content? Because it’s important to be aware of AI’s potential biases and limitations. If you blindly trust AI-generated content, you risk missing out on important context and perspective.

However, not all content that AI writes is bad. But definitely, not all bad content is written by a bot. And I am not also saying that AI is not useful. Yet, it’s essential to identify it to evaluate its reliability and trustworthiness.

There are tools like Originality.AI that can easily detect whether it is an AI-generated text. Still, it is essential to check the content by reading it yourself.

In this blog post, we’ll explore ways you can detect AI-generated content and the tools you can use.

5 Ways To Detect AI Content Without a Detector Tool

Have you read a blog and your first reaction is, “a bot wrote this!”? It can be difficult to distinguish if the content is human-generated or AI-generated because bots are now as smart as humans. They can write like they’re human.

But, after you read these seven ways to detect AI content without using Originality.AI or a detector tool of your choice, you can spot AI content.

1. An AI-Generated Text Is Usually Repetitive

One of the most obvious ways to tell that it is an AI-generated text is repetitive context. An AI blog writer usually follows formulas or rules to create content. A bot simply cannot match a human writer’s store of knowledge.

For example, an AI-generated article might repeat the same key phrases or ideas multiple times or use the same sentence structure multiple times in a row. Repetition can be a telltale sign of AI-generated text, especially if the repetition is excessive or seems out of place.

2. Lack of Analysis of Content Written by a Bot

Another way to detect AI-generated content is to look for a lack of analysis or critical thinking. An AI writer can quickly read information and put simple phrases together. But it lacks the analytical abilities of a human writer and cannot make conclusions from the data provided.

An AI blog writer summarizes a topic’s key points without providing analysis or interpretation. Or, it might present multiple viewpoints on a topic without offering any insights or conclusions. But, human-generated content is more likely to contain analysis, interpretation, and critical thinking.

3. Lack of Emotion and Creativity

Humans, as we are, we have a lot of emotions and different levels of creativity. However, content written by a bot lacks emotion and creativity. AI blog writer tools cannot experience or express emotion like humans.

Similarly, it may lack creativity because it cannot come up with original ideas or think in a divergent or unconventional way. You can compare AI-generated content to food without spices. It’s bland!

4. Unnatural Tone or Style

As writers, we all have different tones and styles of writing. You usually embody your personality in your writing to engage your readers. But writing using a bot have an unnatural tone and style.

Bots look at data and write based on patterns or trends they find. It can lead to content that is repetitive or follows a set pattern. You can also notice on an AI-generated text that there’s no consistent tone.

5. Ask the experts

Finally, ask the experts to easily detect if a bot wrote the content you’re reading. Experts can evaluate the content using the mentioned key points of AI-generated content.

For example, experts may look for common characteristics in AI-generated content, such as a lack of emotion or creativity or an unnatural tone or style. They may also use specialized tools or techniques to analyze the content.

As an expert in examining AI-generated content, I usually use Originally.AI to analyze it faster.

Top 3 Tools To Detect AI-generated Text

As AI content creation tools like ChatGPT becomes more advanced, it becomes harder to tell which pieces of content were created by humans and which ones were made by machines.

If you’re struggling to identify content written by a bot without a tool, here are the top three tools to detect AI-generated content:

1. OriginalityAI

Originality.ai is the only tool that can detect plagiarism and AI-generated content. This tool is great for you if you want to ensure you provide quality and original content to your readers or users. It will scan the content you give and generate a 0-100% score. If the AI score is high, it is likely that a bot wrote your content.

Originality.AI has improved its model to detect content generated by GPT 3.5 and older versions of GPT like GPT-2 and GPT-3. It can also spot AI writers who use ChatGPT because the developers of ChatGPT used a natural language processing model called “GPT 3.5” to make the tool.

The pricing of the tool is fairly low. They charge $0.01 for each credit, and one credit scans 100 words. You can save credits by scanning for only Plagiarism or AI. However, the scan will cost you twice if you want to do both. For pricing information, click on this link

2. Huggingface GPT-2 Output Detector Demo:

GPT-2 Output Detector Demo by Huggingface uses the code that OpenAI released. The tool allows you to copy/paste a piece of text, and it will determine whether it was generated by the AI GPT-2 model or written by a human.

If an AI wrote your content, the indicator would turn red to tell that it is 90-99% fake. On the other hand, if a human wrote your content, the indicator will turn blue to show that it is 90-99% real.

3. Giant Language Model Test Room (GLTR.io)

Alexander Rush, Hendrik Strobelt, Sebastian Gehrmann, the MIT-IBM Watson AI lab, and the Harvard NLP group worked together to develop GLTR.io. It’s a free tool to help detect AI-generated content. Compared to the others I’ve mentioned, the great thing about this tool is that it will show you how likely an AI made the content.

The tool allows you to copy/paste the text into the input box and hit “analyze. It will give a visual analysis accompanied by histograms with statistics about the text. The words are then individually highlighted in yellow, green, violet, and red. If most of your text is highlighted in green, it is likely that it was generated using a language model or AI. And if your writing contains a healthy variety of colors, it is very obvious that a human wrote it.

However, GLTR.io is made with GPT-2. It means it wasn’t trained to detect content generated by GPT-3.

Can Google Detect AI-generated Text?

Can Google Detect AI-generated Text?

Google wants to provide the highest quality results on your queries. And to ensure that users only receive quality and helpful content, Google penalizes low-quality or auto-generated content. John Mueller told Search Engine Journal (SEJ) that content written by a bot is considered auto-generated content, which can get a website penalized.

Google’s system cannot easily detect AI-generated content without the help of human reviewers. But it can easily detect low-quality content. So regardless of whether it has been generated by AI or created by a human, it’s essential to ensure that it meets the standard quality for Google.

Are AI Content Writing Tools Good or Bad for SEO?

Writing bots can be helpful in generating content for a website, but it is important to keep in mind that they are different from human writers and editors. While no study can support if AI tools are good or bad for SEO, we all know Google’s algorithms prioritize high-quality, relevant, and accurate content.

So, if you are using AI writing tools to generate content for your website, it is important to use them in conjunction with human review. And edit the content to ensure that it meets the quality standards and relevance required for effective SEO.

Conclusion

Detecting AI-generated content can be important for evaluating the reliability and trustworthiness of the information you are reading. There are several ways to detect it, such as by looking for repetition in the content, lack of analysis, emotion, creativity, and unnatural tone and style. Or you can use a tool like Originality.AI to analyze the GPT-3 content.
